Reluctant Reader Assessment

Use our free guide to assess your learners literacy skills
Are you concerned about someone’s reading and spelling?
It is our belief that a “reluctant reader,” or someone who “just hates reading” is likely someone whose literacy skills could use some work. We get it––most people do not immediately love something that is challenging. Social comparison starts before kids even realize it. From their perspective, fitting in at school is already hard enough. Why call attention to something they or others perceive as a weakness?
Unlike being “bad at sports” or another extracurricular, being “bad at spelling and reading” can have serious consequences for achieving their dreams. Poor literacy skills lead to low self-confidence, and we don’t want that for anyone. That’s why we have created this tool for you to use at home to gain clarity on your situation.

Our Free Reluctant Reader Assessment is designed to give parents and educators a comprehensive snapshot of a student’s literacy skills. This targeted evaluation covers key areas such as phonemic awareness, reading fluency, spelling accuracy, handwriting, understanding of sentence structure, and prosody when reading aloud. It examines both phonetic and non-phonetic word knowledge, providing insights into which concepts the learner has mastered, needs to review, or still needs to learn.

While not a diagnostic tool for dyslexia or dysgraphia, this assessment reveals a learner’s current literacy level and highlights areas for focused support. Perfect for any student who has already begun learning letter formation, from elementary to adulthood, this assessment offers an actionable roadmap for improving literacy skills.

This assessment requires a parent or educator to administer and is not intended for self-assessment. Ready to gain clarity on your student’s reading journey? Download your free assessment now!
